Fearless Nomad | Sian Richardson

Sian is a cool ass person. Just sayin'..  She also is a fantastic designer which is basically how I discovered her. She currently has her own businesses where she helps entrepreneurs carve their own path.

One day Sian and I decided we should skype chat because we both had been working for Death To The Stock Photo, plus its always fun to meet people that live on opposite sides of the world! After our skype sesh I discovered that in real life she has this super duper chill vibe about her that you can instantly click with. Also, just by talking to her you may inherit some of her cool points.

I wanted to interview her for our blog series because lately she is doing so many awesome things with her business and I am constantly in awe by all the cool shit she makes. Her free courses have even helped us figure out our business a little more in depth and it was really helpful when figuring out who our audience was. Check out her interview, go to her website and follow her on Instagram!

OK, SO..WHAT DO YOU DO?

I'm Sian, and I'm a Creative Entrepreneur/Wanderlusing Kiwi! My ultimate mish is to help other entrepreneurs win at their own game, and carve their own path.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?

Some new digital product ideas... And I still have one 1-1 design client that I work with on an ongoing basis.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT CREATING YOUR OWN RULES AND RUNNING YOUR OWN SHOW?

Literally exactly that — that I can do whatever I want... No one telling me how much money I can make or how many hours I have to work or how I have to spend my days.

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY?

Don't work without a contract. I learned that the hard way on a very big job, when I should have known better, and it was not a fun time.

HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR DREAM CLIENTS?

For me... I always just focused on doing the BEST work I could. In all honesty I never really had to go looking for them because they had a way of finding me. I never did any advertising. I just focused on being a bloody good designer + biz person, and trusted that people would find me through word of mouth. And they did!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

Say yes to everything in your first year. Be extremely cautious of who you follow online. Curate the shit out of your social media feeds and blog feeds. Create more than you consume.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR?

I think just quitting my job in the first place and running my business — that was MASSIVE. Also when I just started to see my income increase to a point where I was making around double what I was in my 9-5... That was massive. It wasn't even about the money, it was just the fact that I actually made it work and I was doing shit on my own terms.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR OWN BRAND?

Hmmm... I guess it started when I first decided I wanted to start freelancing. I wanted my work to be different — everything else out there was the same and it was boring to me. I just committed to crafting a style that was fresh, and represented ME, as well as my clients, obviously. Lol. I think over time though, you realise that trying to be someone else or trying to build a Brand that doesn't reflect you – it never works. And people can see through it.

YOU HELP OTHERS DISCOVER THEIR BRANDS. WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST WHEN HELPING OTHERS FIGURE OUT WHO THEY ARE?

I think just seeing other people do all of this stuff in their biz when you can tell it's just not their vibe. It kills me. So someone told you to do a webinar but you hate video and it's just not you? Don't do it. Lol. Stuff like that... I hate seeing people be all like 'You gotta do THIS in your biz NOW!'. I'm like... No. You can't tell people that. They have to carve their own path.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU AREN'T CREATING AND RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

Explore! Or hit up the gym... I've been getting way more into that over the last year or so, and it's been awesome. But yeah, exploring and road trips are my jam.

HOW HAS TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE HELPED YOUR BRAND?

Adventure always brings me back down to earth. It's so damn easy to get caught up in business and clients and work and making money, you forget that there's a whole world out there. Exploring and being in the mountains or on the road - that's home for me. That part of my life helps me get the hell out of my own head. I'd be a deadset nutcase without adventure in my life. Ha.
